Here’s a real world test off my Palm Pre working as a WiFi Router on a business trip in Santa Barbara connecting 2 laptops simultaneously.

Even this YouTube is video is being uploaded via my Palm Pre’s WiFi Router while my friend is downloading/watching HD videos. Not too shabby as I am not having to pay the $2.99 for internet access plus its more secure than unsecured hotel internet. Yey!
Btw, my friend has an iPhone 3G, he is really WOWED at this point that my Palm Pre is connecting multiple computers and also “TWEETING” my GPS location to Twitter so my family can track me.

Once you’ve connected to your Palm Pre with root privileges, you now have access to more than just a smartphone, but a potentially powerful handheld linux workstation/server. A wealth of resources for the Palm Pre are now growing and expanding across the Internet.
I was able to take any WiFi-capable device that had a browser (e.g. iPod Touch) at Best Buys and get it to access the Internet through the Palm Pre. You could also get 2 laptops and a wireless printer to all share the same wireless network or internet connection. The Palm Pre can distribute unique IP addresses for each device requesting WiFi connectivity (DHCP).
Despite being Palm’s latest and 1st generation device, it’s easy to see now why so many people have already bought or are anxious to get the Palm Pre. The Palm Pre is truly awesome, it’s so useful. No other smartphone except the Palm Pre can function as a Wireless Router!
Here’s a step-by-step instructions on how to install the free My Tether app for Palm Pre, which turns your Pre into a WiFi router.

[..YouTube..] yes there are ways for networks to monitor their data packets but implementing this would degrade and reduce the speed of their network by adding conditional scans across billions of data packets. this would upset subscribers and they would lose thousands of clients to other networks who don’t mind tethering (verizon?)

[..YouTube..] correction. pda net can use phone as modem. not as router.. it is a big difference. u can coneect 10 computer at once with one pre but not wiindows mobile
[..YouTube..] pdanet does not provide routing services. according to setup instructions for pdanet, you must use your computer as the router. turn off your computer and try to connect your wii console, ipod touch, or wifi printer to your smartphone pdanet; it won’t happen..but with the pre it will work by itself.

[..YouTube..] sprint is bad ass,verizon restricts tethering and charges you 15 on top of the data pack you have to get so it 45 $
[..YouTube..] palmpreflix – opps, i didn’t mean pdanet, i meant WMWifiRouter – it’s the app i used on my HTC Diamond to connect up to 4 devices, i only used it for my iPod Touch and my Netbook, it got really hot after a while.
