Supposing your modem does have an Internet connection. The cable (cat5) that was normally run from the router to the computer should now go to the router thus enabling the router.
And again supposing the laptop has a working wireless connection. Go-control panel-network connections-right click and select repair. If that don’t work in control panel go wireless connections and follow the wizards instructions.
Also after the router is connected to the modem connect the laptop to the wired port and make sure your modem/router is properly connected.
Hello lojo,
There are a couple of things you can check first. This is assuming you know how to get into the router setup thru the browser interface. It will connect to your DSL modem using the PPPoE procol and you will need to fill in your ISP Username and password information in the router fields provided – this is all done from the Basic Setup Tab in the Router setup.
If you call someone to come out and setup your router it will cost a lot of $$ and it’s not really that hard to do, once you know the steps. Here is a link to the Quick-Start and User Guides for the WRT54G router – you will just need to find the version number of your router but the picture on the webpage shows you where to look and then you can download them and they will give you specific instructions to help you get hooked up: http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_CASupport_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1166859837401&packedargs=sku%3DWRT54G&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=3740137401B01&displaypage=download
If you need someone to help you for free, then here is the link for the Linksys Live Chat tech help and they will help you get things hooked up for free. Click on link and then click on Live Chat on lower left side of screen: http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_CASupport_C1&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1166859677881&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=7788119816B40
If you need to actually talk to someone, then I would recommend calling your DSL tech support help line, many times they will help customers get things like this connected up to the DSL modem.
Try to find a friend who is tech savy and get him/her to help you.
