First time buying a laptop, am I making the right choice?

The budget is about $750-$800.

If anyone can recommend a good site or anything different that I should check out, please suggest it.

Here’s the best thing my buddy found so far.

HP dv6000z series
Vista
AMD Turion(TM) 64 X2 Dual-Core TL-50(1.6GHz/512KB)
15.4″WXGA Brightview Widescreen (1280×800)
NVIDIA(R) GeForce (R) Go 6150 w/Productivity Ports
HP Imprint Finish + Microphone +Webcam
2GB DDR2 System Memory (2Dimm)
120 GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
8X DVD+/-R?RW wDouble Layer Support
802.11 a/b/g WLAN and Bluetooth
6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery ( I could use some advice on this. What happens if I upgrade to a 12?)
and a bunch of software

It’s not really for me, but I told my buddy I’d ask my expert friends if he’s making the right choice.

Thats a good spec, I install a few of these and they do work very well.
As to battery, bigger cell is useful if travels a lot for longer battery life.

computer get A LOT cheaper in weeks/monthes/years
so does he need it now?
just looking at the info you gave, it is pretty good for everyday use, but not for very high end games

Sounds good. I would try to get it to 1.7 or higher. If you upgrade to 12 cell, it would last way longer.
