I have a desktop and just installed a wireless router for my daughter’s laptop. I have an antivirus program on my PC but I’m still worried that the router has made it more vulnerable…true or not true? Any advice?

True ..wireless is less secure than being wired into the router ….But this is just from a hacking point of few and nothing to do with getting viruses …When having a wireless network make sure it is secure with a WAP or WEP key and change the default password in the router so no one can hack into your router
Not true as to making it more vulnerable to infections and actually makes your network connections more secure than with a modem only IF you have your router’s security configured properly. Good luck!!
Yes that is true.
You should secure the wireless router by turning on the WEP.
Go to Kim Komandos web site and type in wireless router (in the search this site) and your questions will be answered.
She also has tips and downloads for tons of stuff.
My favorite place for computer questions.
It makes it easier for a hacker to get into your computer that is true. If he got the password to your router he could then have to bypass your computers firewall. But hackers are pretty good at that.
If you have set up good passwords on the wireless router so only you can change the settings and you have a good WPA password for the network, you have nothing to worry about. WEP security is minimal, it’s like leaving a key to your house under the front doormat. A WPA or WPA2 enabled network is extremely secure. Just make sure your firewall is enabled and enjoy the freedom you now have.
