With WEP and wireless networking becoming more active in around the US, how important is security?

Would you trust the methods that exist today to secure these technologies?

nothing is truely 100% secure. someone, somewhere will always hack something. with or without encryption. for my personal computer wep works fine. :-)

wep is not as secure as WPA and WPA personal. At least that’s what I understand.

With the ease of getting into an unsecured network, it is important that you protect yourself as much as possible. WPA2 is the strongest, but also turn off file sharing without password and turn off remote management. Make sure you have a good firewall that is active. Those actions should give really good protection.

a knoppix bootable cd with airsnort will break wep encryption every time. In fact…it’s designed to.

As for the importance of security…

Imagine the legal nightmare you’ll go through if someone accesses your unencrypted wireless network with a laptop from a car on the street, and then downloads kiddy porn, or other illegal stuff.

It’s your IP address that the ISP will flag. It’s your account that the FBI will access. It’s your life turned upside down because you didn’t encrypt your wireless network with a strong enough encryption algorithm.

It is impossible to trace a wireless connection back to a laptop. Quadruple that when you consider that the person can easily spoof his IP and MAC addresses!

Use WPA. And while your at it, turn off the wireless router’s beacon. That way no one will even see that your wireless network is even out there in the first place.

Its imopratnt to use a vairety of security technologies to secure networks especially a wireless network. Some of the main componets to wirelss security is: MAC Address filtering, WPA2, and TKIP/AES encryption. Also make sure you restrict access to physical ports and the physical wireless devices and it can be even easier to simply hook into or steal. You may also want to consider turning off the antenna signal when not in use as well.
