The lag you see is likely due to the ISP speed, not your modme or router. The internal network speed for wifi is usually 54mps, for wired is usually 100mps. Plenty fast for anything. However your ISP external internet speed will be max 10mps for cable (20mps for extra money) or 1-2mps for DSL. You often get less than published internet speeds as the traffic increases on your ISP.
You should get, at a minimum, a wireless-B router. The 11 Mbps speed of wireless is typically more than what your ISP provides you (top tier for my cable provider is 15 mbps download for extra money).
However, keep in mind that the rated speed for wireless is the absolute total bandwidth. Meaning a simulataneous maximum of 5.5 Mbps Downlink and 5.5 Mbps Uplink. Therefore, if your ISP offers more than that (or, if you want some future proofing) I’d highly recommend getting Wireless-G and its 54 Mbps.
If you intend to stream media from your computer to your xbox, I’d highly recommend going with Wireless-N. Depending on the manufacturer, you can attain speeds of up to 270 Mbps, which will go a long way towards providing smooth media streaming.
With wireless-N routers being so abundant and cheap, there’s almost no reason not to go with one.
