Set up wireless security, and create a network key, it’s easy, if you’re using a linksys router, go to 192.168.1.1 by default the username is blank, password is admin, make sure you change password.
Hi there,
I would use WPA encryption to stop people gaining access to your router.
This is done under your router admin interface.
You will have to do it via a cable tho as your wirless comptuers will disconnect once its set up, Then simply enter the WPA into the properties of the PC’s wireless card adn bobs your uncle, no one can get on to your network without your WPA key think of it as password.
thanks
Paul
btw i wouldnt recommend WEP is its insecure and can be cracked in a few minutes
if u have a new router — 1 year old — use wap2 or wap —-this will lock them out – most have an auto set up— links does —- all u do is press the button on the front—- allways read the instructions
There are two ways; you can use either, or both at the same time. The first is WEP encryption: you enter a key into your router and each of your wireless network cards (in your pc’s). The second is MAC authentication; each of your wireless cards has an address that is assigned to it, and is not on any other card. Its in the form xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx; You can see this information by clicking Start>Run and entering cmd, then press enter. In the window, enter “ipconfig /all” (no quotes). you will see all the settings of youe network card. Write down the MAC address and enter it into your router settings. As you don’t list the name of your router, you may have to use its documentation to find it.
Another way is to set the router to filter MAC (or physical) addresses. Each wireless and LAN adapter have an unique number, and you can tell the router to only allow specific ones.
Everyone will see your network and packets, but the router won’t talk to them.
To get the info, you should open a Command Prompt, and type “ipconfig /all” and type the physical address. Another way: on almost all adapters there’s a sticker with the MAC address.
