Get a firewall and make sure you have a spyware and virusscanner (this goes to everyone who has internet) This should keep your computer safe.
Security is first set at the Router. You need to log into your Wireless Router and set up a Password. Make sure you write it down.
Then go into your Control Panel and run the Wireless Network Setup Wizard. You will need to enter the password you created in the router, to one of the screens while running the Wireless setup wizard. If I heard correctly, WPA is more secure then WEP.
Good Luck
Download Xoftspy SE from http://www.geeksjunction.com to better protect your computer from spyware and adware.
If you’ve ben provided a router / wireless access point. You will need to connect your computer to it via a cable (cat5 network cable) and use the router’s configuration pages to set up the internal security.
You can use this setup guide from Microsoft which works with some of the more common routers:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/moredone/wirelesssetup.mspx
If you’re a home user you can use WEP, or WPA, etc.. whichever is easier to setup for you and whichever works with your wireless cards… WEP is less secure because the IV (initialization vector) is static… for the home user this is not much of an issue really… but if you’re able to use a more secure protocol, go for it.
After you set everything up on your router, save the changes, exit. Then you will configure those settings within the computer’s wireless applet.
I recommend you run windows update automatically so that you’re getting the latest bug fixes and security updates. You might always want to go to the office update site and same goes for progams you use regularly.
Make sure you have antivirus and firewall from a RELIABLE vendor like McAfee and make sure it is configured properly to scan for PuPs and automatically updating. You may also want to get Spybot S&D from safer-networking.org which will scan and protect against spyware/adware. Make sure your browser’s pop-up blocker is enabled. And if you’re computer savvy you might want to do a google search for “vista hardening procedures”.
I also recommend turning off any remote assistance or remote desktop features and any file sharing features.
Good Luck
You can add a encrypting software that will encrypt the traffic so it cannot be accessed if stolen. You can also secure the network
with a password or higher security. Vista offers the ability to determine what will be shared on the network. Click the wireless icon at the botom and pull up the Network Sharing Options. Hope this helps!
here I have found two articles on wireless security, I hope them helpful for you:
