What does stealing wireless from the neighbors do to their connection and yours?

I’m trying to convince my dad that we should get our own wireless instead of stealing off the neighbors. Our connection is slow and unstable, and I need a fast/stable connection for my school. He says it wouldn’t be any better if we had our own. Can someone please explain to me how it works when we steal the wireless vs having our own? I’ve heard something about bandwidth..and it being slower when more people are using it. Thanks for any help!

well for start it would stop you breaking the law everytime you connect to it. If you want the internet you need to get it yourself as using other peoples connection without their knowledge is illegal, (at least it is in the UK). Other than that you will get to choose what ISP you use and the connection will be stronger and you wont have that uneasy feeling of uniformed men knocking on your door one day!

If 2 of you are using the same connection, the throughput speed is cut in half.
It’s also illegal in the US.
If the neighbor wants to he can tell if someone is hijacking his connection.
Tell your dad he is a scumbag!

As teh other responder noted, it is illegal. Bandwidth is the amount of data that can flow from a point to computers. The bandwidth is normally allocated to the quantity connected, therefore divided in amount. Being further away and with a weaker signal, you may not get the same protion since the units closer would ‘flood’ the signal and get the most. Wireless routers can be and should be setup with security encryption that will prevent others from using it. Also, if file sharing is enabled on the computers on the network, then files can be opened, copied and changed on machines from others. I am surprised the owner has not seen your system on the network and locked it down. They must not use it much or are running an older machine thinking it is the computer that has the problem. With your own, it will assure your connectivity and bandwidth throughput.

DONT DO THAT… just just get your own internet less then 35.00 a month and a router.. a good one for about 60.00 in a one time payment

Stealing wireless is highly illegal, punishable by stiff penalties and just poor taste overall. That being said, your own connection will most likely be much more stable, faster, and… ummm…. maybe even properly secured from those who might want to steal from you. Wifi signal strength decreases rapidly with distance and unless your neighbor is directly above or below you you aren’t getting the best signal possible. Further, you’re correct about bandwidth decreasing as more use it. The more people using a certain bandwidth, the less each one actually has to their own. And sorry but… shame on dad for not encouraging the right path. Unless your neighbor has expressly granted you permission to “steal” then it’s clearly illegal.

It is illegal as well as perfectly ethical. In legal terms, you are ‘stealing’. But in ethical terms, you are just sharing — pretty much like car pooling.

It’d be great if wireless Internet comes at no cost since the routing equipments can easily be managed by shared expenses in every community and long distances can be covered by some ISP of sorts who’ll be paid by the community as a whole.

That apart, you are likely to experience slower speeds if you don’t have a connection of your own. And, if your neighbor chooses to use encryption to lock up their connection, you won’t be able to use it (or steal it, in your own words) at all.
