I have a computer having the following configuration.
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.40 GHz 2.39 GHz
Intel Pentium D865GBF Board
96 MB built in graphics memory
512 MB DDR2 Kingston RAM
80GB Hard Drive
Lite-on-it CD R-RW
ASUS DVD Drive
Toshiba Floppy Drive
D-Link Network Adaptor attached with a motorola WiMAX Wireless Broadband Gateway.
I have windows xp proffessional service pack 2, never re-installed since 2002.
The problem is that since past few days, now my computer takes precise 2 minutes to reach the logon screen. Before, that was not a problem because it only had to take a few seconds to reach the logon screen. It also checks the floppy drive while logging on even if i un-installed my AVG Free Edition. There is nothing installed which has to check my floppy drive, but still it checks while logging on. There is no virus in my computer I know, not even any spyware.
But, my hard drive now suffers from 16KB of bad sectors. I don’t think it has to do with the logon process.
Once the computer passes the logon screen, everything works fine and smooth like a new computer.
Yes it tries to read something, but no program right now wants to do that, not even the windows itself.
And for you Linux OS, I never installed it since 2002, and don’t want even now. And thats not the solution you are talking about, its like buy a new computer, and not to take care of the one you already have. Anyways, thanks.
mani, what if you disable those extra booting devices? Nice try anyways.
Jesse C, yes you are right, so?
What ever that fits in my board djfear12… And all of you are talking about what ever I have already checked but in vain. Any ways thanks. I’ll still be looking for the best answer.
Everything is doing great as soon as the computer passes the logon screen. The only problem is it takes too long while booting (where the blue tabs scroll under windows proffessional logo no a black screen just before the logon screen).
lchasser, I have gone through all the utilities already before I put the question here. CCleaner helped to clean the registry but not the problem I am in right now.

Defrag, fix all the registry errors, compact the registry. Hope. If hope fails, format & reinstall (on a new hard disk without errors).
does your floppy drive make noise like it is trying to read a disk that is not there? this happens AFTER logon right? you have somehow associated a program or file with your floppy drive. i’ve seen this problem before. the way to fix this would be to click on “my computer” click on tools click on folder options then select the file types tab. scroll through these file types and try to find the file type (that relates to the program you think you used on the floppy drive) that you accidently associated your floppy drive with and delete that file type. (this is not always easy to figure out) otherwise every time on bootup it will try to read that type of file i’m sure that is what you are talking about right? just answer me this : I know a floppy drives make a noise on bootup but if the floppy drive makes a noise after or while it is logging on it is because of what i just explained ok if your floppy drive is doing ok then youve added a program which makes your pc take longer to boot up. i know for one mcaffee security suite made my pc take an extra 3 minutes to boot up well not actually boot up but to load in other words the little orange light was still reading blinking for three minutes longer because of that program which by the way is a piece of crap
Haha, do you want an “off-course” answer?
Attach a few thousand helium balloons and a tracking device to your PC, open the window. Watch it sail off and track its progress. When it eventually lands, your problem should be solved.
:P
Goto Start–>Run and type msconfig.
Look at what are there in startup tab. Maybe recently some startup programs were added which is causing this slowness during startup.
If you find any that you suspect are not needed. Pls disable them and reboot. Check if that solved the problem.
Pls let us know the result so that we can help further.
This is not a prob to think about every compi checks all the boot device at the time of startup so as to confirm that there is no bootable cd & or floppy to boot from u can disable if by giving ur HD the first boot piroty by going in ur motherboard settings at start up
you need to clean out your registry and your msconfig could probably use some optimizing. Adding ram couldn’t hurt neither. O yes before i forget get windows XP SP3 RC1 its a beta of SP3 but i still suggest you get it my older computer has been running grate with it.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=75ED934C-8423-4386-AD98-36B124A720AA&displaylang=en
here is what you can run:
WinCleaner Memory Optimizer
avast! Antivirus
Eusing Free Registry Cleaner
Disk Cleanup (Built into OS)
Disk Defragmenter (Built into OS)
Also configure your msconfig start up and services by going to start > run > type “msconfig” go to start up and services edit any programs you don’t need on start up make sure not to mess up windows or anything relating to microsoft. Also you can edit your registry by going to start > run > type “regedit” (((DO NOT DO THIS IF YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING)))
All of this is free download able software you can also clean out you computer jest dust it out can of air and or a air compressor. jest do a search on each and download them.
i would put all your personal files on disks and do a system restore. Then update all your drivers. You`ll notice a massive difference.
More RAM?
It may be a BIOS problem. That all depends on exactly where it’s checking for the floppy.
When the comp first boots it looks for boot disk, but that can be disabled in BIOS. Might want to make sure Quick Boot is enabled in BIOS to.
Maybe someone played around with it, or something. If you’re actually at the log in log in screen like where you click your user name then I have no idea what would be communicating with your floppy.
Hard drive going bad or RAM going bad can seriously slow down a computer, but that’s just guessing.
so here is a link to troubleshooting your board on intel.com
http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/CS-010254.htm#slowboot
while i was there, i noticed that this board supports ddr400, not ddr2 you stated. Since ddr2 has a different physical design, it wouldn’t fit it this board anyway…so what type of memory are you using?
Format and Reinstall
There are many things that affect boot-up time.
First, searching for a floppy drive is set by your BIOS. There is a setting in there for that. In fact, BIOS can make your boot-up look first to a floppy. Used many times by IT Techs for small utility programs. You can tell the system in BIOS NOT to look for a floppy drive
Second, many programs now have utilities built in that check the internet when you boot up for possible udates to their program. Personally I will not let a program just access the interet whenever it wants. I am responsible enough to check for program updates on a more or less schedule of weekly or so.
So check with your MSCONFIG and see what programs are starting up when you boot your computer. Is your Printer checking for updates, your Virus Program, your Video Driver, your new game, your Nero Utility etc etc etc ?
Do you also know that Windows has to load all the fonts in the Fonts Folder when it boots? Have you got Fonts up the ying yang ? Especially those pretty ones you download occasionally.
Those are the things that affect your boot-up time.
And for a system loaded in 2002, I would recommend a good System Registry Cleaner to weed out entries that are no longer needed as the Registry loads on bootup also.
Hope you find out
