Help with a Linksys Wireless-G router please?

I have been very pleased with my Linksys Wireless WRT54G router for 2 years, using my first laptop with Windows XP and a single-core processor & 512 Mb DDR RAM.
There was never a problem.

That laptop died and I now have a new one with a much faster dual-core processor, over 2 Gb DDR RAM and large L2 cache.
It runs Windows Vista, which used a lot of memory but I disabled many of the unnecessary startup programs and others running in the background.
The computer is extremely fast now.

When I use my Linksys wireless, it gets locked up, especially when viewing movies like YouTube.
It only happens wireless at home.
A direct hard-wired connection to the cable router is blinding fast with no lockups. Wireless at my workplace is fast too.

Is my Linksys Wireless-G considered outdated for my new system?

Is there a way to make the Linksys Wireless fast enough to keep up?

What is today’s fastest Wireless router available in case I want a new one?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
I have already updated all Linksys firmware.

I do not think anyone else is using my bandwidth. My wireless uses encryption and the wireless SSID broadcast option is disabled.

I’m not sure the exact number but i think the fastest the WRT54G can transmit via wireless is 54 or 58mbps. Guna go with 54mbps since its in the name.
A hardline connection does not have this limitation, its usuallly around 100mbps or higher.
    That would be my guess.

Wireless-N (802.11n) , up to 248mbps. Its the newest thing out.

Try to configure your card to use G instead of b or a signals. Also clear the air from any like blocking the signals for your laptop and the router.

There are two possibilities, one of which you’ve taken care of – new firmware from Linksys. The other one is overheating – you’re downloading faster now, so the wireless radio is getting hotter. Make sure that the holes in the router are all clear of dust, pet hair, etc. And make sure that the router has free air on all sides and isn’t in an enclosed space or near or on any other equipment (line your modem) – anything that can be creating heat.

The router should be able to download at 54mbps and keep running without locking up, and your internet connection probably isn’t nearly that fast, so the router shouldn’t be locking up. (Early firmware had a bug if you downloaded a lot, fast, on a wireless connection, but it was fixed around version 3, I think.)
