How to connect to program port on PC over the internet with browser?

I can connect to this program on my PC called (remote control suite) via WIFI on my home network with my iphone webrowser by typing http://(my PC IP address):88. However, I can’t connect to it when outside my local network or using my 3G internet data plan on my iphone. This program creates an ir (infa-red) remote controller to change channels on my tv cable box that is accessible via a url so I can change the channel remotely. I have a scientific atlantic modem, lynksys WRT54G router and a HP PC. I tried to follow some port forwarding info I found online by finding out all my equipments IP’s etc. but with no success. Any instructions would be great!

You’re on the right track. You need to forward port 88 (probably TCP, but it wouldn’t hurt to do UDP also). Also, you’ll need a way to determine your home computer’s IP address. Since with most residential internet connections, the IP address will change every so often, it’s a good idea to use some sort of dynamic DNS service (like DynDNS — http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/dyndns/ ) to map your IP to a DNS name and keep it up to date.

You can find good guides on port forwarding here: http://www.portforwarding.com/

Once you set up a DynDNS account, you’ll need to download the client and run it on your computer (any computer in your house will work, just make sure that computer is on all the time). You will also get an address like http://whateveryoupicked.something.com/ and you will be able to connect to your service by typing that address plus the :88 into a web browser on your phone.

you need to set up in your router to port forward port 88 to your local pc ip address. you need to know your public ip address first. if your public ip is dynamic it would be difficult because everytime you turn off your modem it will change ip and you need to set it up again…much better if you have application that you want to access from outside you have static public ip. you can ask from your isp but you need to add more bucks…good luck…jexter@eastern.com.ph
